Power Sector

CEEW seeks to hire an intern to work in our state-focused programme based out of Lucknow. The intern will assist the team in the Lucknow office on analysis pertaining to the orders issued by the regulatory commission, track performance of utilities in the state, benchmarking of performance metrics against utilities in other states and communicating with various stakeholders (discom officials, district administration, panchayats, civil society organisations, etc.) on the ground.

Our programme of work on power sector is driven with the broader objective to support a sustainable – environmental, financial and social, transition of the power sector through evidence- based unbiased research and cutting-edge analytical approaches. The candidate should have an interest in the past and the future of the power sector.

Job Duties and Accountabilities


  • Conduct regular literature review and keep a tab on current debate/ research on the power sector in national and global context
  • Carry out periodic analysis of the performance of the power sector – on both generation, and variability in generation
  • Come up with innovative ideas to better understand, measure, monitor, communicate and (ultimately) improve the power supply situation in the country
  • Interface with Renewable Energy (RE) team at CEEW to drive insights on the emerging challenges to RE integration
  • Carry out assessment of energy demand across various end-use sectors
  • Assist in writing research reports/papers
  • Assist with gathering content for blogs, policy briefs as and when required

Project Assistance

  • Assist with specific projects and overall plan of activities under the power sector programme, by being an integral part of the team.
  • Assist in preparing presentations, fact sheets, and other research communication material.
  • Prepare national and international database of existing institutions, researchers and other important stakeholders, funding agencies, working in the domain

Selection Criteria


  • Master’s degree (currently enrolled or completed) with specialisation in engineering, economics, public policy, development studies or related fields
  • Keen interest in issues related to power sector and economic policy
  • Basic understanding of power sector and energy systems
  • Familiarity and a high degree of comfort with statutes in the electricity sector and the functioning of various statutory bodies

Main skills

  • Strong analytic skills including quantitative research methods and tools that are fit for purpose
  • Ability to conduct techno-economic analysis, cost & benefit analysis, sound knowledge of basic economic principles
  • Insightful and concise writing in English
  • Ability to communicate and coordinate effectively as a team member. Proficiency in word-processing and presentation tools

  • Willingness to travel outside Lucknow for meetings and field trips
  • Ability to adapt deliver under tight deadlines in a professional environment
