Designation Offered: Research Analyst – Power Sector (UP Power Programme)

Job Location: Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh

Reporting to: Research Fellow


CEEW seeks to hire a suitable candidate on a full-time basis, having an understanding of the past and the future of the power sector and electricity markets, and have an active interest in ensuring long term sustainability of power sector value chain. In Uttar Pradesh, the CEEW’s power sector work is focused at building a responsive consumer base, facilitating institutional reforms in the sector, and formulating strategies to bring discoms’ revenues at par with their costs. The candidate would be expected to conduct research and analysis using both primary and secondary data, closely engage with stakeholders in the state, and support other activities planned by the organisation to fulfil the said objectives.

Job Duties and Accountabilities


  • Conduct regular literature review and keep a tab on current debate/ research on the power sector in national and global context
  • Thorough understanding Tariff Regulations and knowledge of regulations applicable in the power sector
  • Study the techno-commercial details and governance dynamics of discoms
  • Carry out periodic analysis of the performance of the power sector in UP – on both generation, and distribution fronts
  • Knowledge in upcoming areas including EV, storage, smart grid, digitisation in power, renewable energy forecasting/scheduling, etc
  • Come up with innovative ideas to better understand, measure, monitor, and support improvements in financial performance of the discom and consumer welfare
  • Studying state wise power procurement policies and practices and identifying efficiency improvements possible, and key barriers to implementing these
  • To write briefs and issue notes which could be circulated among senior Government officials and other stakeholders
  • Work with senior researchers on conceptualising new projects (as and when needed)
  • Provide research content for organisation’s web pages, blogs, policy briefs etc

Project Assistance

  • Assist with project implementation, including help with preparing presentations, factsheets and other communication material
  • Prepare notes and briefs for various events (roundtable discussion, workshop, conference, etc.)
  • Accompany team members for meetings with other stakeholders and prepare minutes of the meetings and assist with relevant follow ups

Selection Criteria


  • Master’s degree with specialisation in power, engineering, economics, public policy, development studies or related fields.
  • Familiarity and a high degree of comfort with statutes in the electricity sector and the functioning of various statutory bodies.

Main skills

  • Strong analytic skills including quantitative research methods and tools that are fit for purpose
  • Ability to conduct techno-economic analysis, cost & benefit analysis, sound knowledge of basic economic principles
  • Those having prior experience of working with discoms and state electricity regulatory commission will be preferred, though fresher graduates are also encouraged to apply.
  • Self-starters with analytical abilities and liaison skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate and coordinate effectively as a team member
