Designation Offered Research Analyst – Air Pollution

Reporting to Senior Programme Lead


The Risks and Adaptation team seeks to hire a Research Analyst to expand its work in the area of air pollution mitigation. The Research Analyst would conduct quantitative and qualitative research, including data collection, data analysis, statistical analysis, survey design, stakeholder interviews and engagement, and would support the advancement of the research and policy engagement for air quality.

Job Duties and Accountabilities


  • To perform primary and secondary data collection and analysis
  • To engage with city and state nodal agencies to understand their research requirements
  • To work on atmospheric models or tools such as AERMOD/ Python/QGIS/R etc.
  • To analyse data using tools like MS Excel, STATA, R, etc.
  • To conduct field surveys: questionnaire designing, coordinating with field staffs
  • To keep a tab on the policy developments in India and across key countries of the world on air pollution
  • To assist the team to work on multi-disciplinary projects, proposal writing and project development.

Project/Programme Assistance

  • To contribute to publications including policy briefs, reports as well as publish in high-quality peer reviewed national and international journals
  • To participate in relevant conferences, workshops, training programmes for a comprehensive understanding of developments relevant to air quality issues
  • Assist with project implementation, including help with preparing presentations and policy material.
  • Support effective communication of research outputs, through close coordination with outreach team, engagement with wider network of stakeholders, and concerned policymakers
  • Support senior team members for important meetings and sessions, prepare notes, and conduct follow-ups, as required
  • Participate in weekly team meetings and assist with preparing minutes.

Selection Criteria


  • Master’s degree with a specialisation in Atmospheric Chemistry/ Environmental Science/ Environment Technology and allied.
  • Should have a strong research background, including an understanding of experimental and analytical research. 
  • Experience in dealing with pollutant concentration and meteorological data sets.
  • Familiarity with environmental and in particular air pollution and urban governance in the country.

Business Experience

  • 0-2 years for Research Analyst and 2-4 experience for Programme Associate.

Main Skills

  • Ability to work on and configure, air quality models – simple Lagrangian models to more comprehensive integrated tools such as WRF-CAMx, will be an added bonus for any candidate
  • Knowledge on air pollution monitoring technologies and management 
  • Strong analytic skills including quantitative research skills
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to use MS Office application suite
  • Relevant publications in peer reviewed journals/book chapters
  • Desirable: Knowledge of remote-sensing for air quality 
  • Experience in dealing with stakeholders (farmers, grassroot workers, government, etc.) preferred.


  • Willingness to learn new (research and project management) skills
  • Ability to adapt to new environment and deliver under tight deadlines in a professional environment
  • Striving for rigour in research and quality in work output
  • Ability to effectively work in a team while being able to independently drive research with minimum assistance, when time demands.
  • Ability to dig deeper into details, while also keeping a sense of the broader objectives and big picture

  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary and multicultural environment.
