Position offered: Research Intern – Energy and Rural Livelihoods

Reporting to: Research Analyst

Location: New Delhi, India

Duration: 4-6 months

CEEW seeks to hire an intern who will assist in conducting research for CEEW’s programme on building an ecosystem for clean energy powered livelihoods in rural India. CEEW offers an intellectually challenging and conducive work environment, with a focus on research rigour, innovative thinking, and strategic outreach.

The Energy Access team is one of the eight focus areas at CEEW. Lack of access to energy is a barrier for households, communities, and enterprises in reaching their desired potential. CEEW in partnership with Villgro has recently launched a USD 2.5 million initiative, ‘Powering Livelihoods’, that aims to support enterprises deploying energy-efficient and/or clean energy-powered livelihoods solutions in rural India.

With a vision that within the next ten years decentralised renewable energy will be an integral part of rural livelihoods, this programme seeks to ignite the transformation, few enterprises at a time. Powering Livelihoods will bridge the commercial valley of death by providing financial and capacity-building support to enterprises with field-tested technologies to undertake deployment of their solutions, large enough to demonstrate their commercial viability and make the key stakeholders take notice. Supporting commercial deployment will drive enterprise growth enabling them to establish their business model and demonstrate a track record of operations, building a wider pool of investible opportunities in the sector.

The programme aims to achieve its objectives through three key activities, viz, capital support, technical assistance and sectoral growth assistance. As part of sectoral growth assistance, we would be mapping the market opportunities for each of the solutions offered by the enterprises in our cohort. In addition, we would be engaging with stakeholders in the sector to understand best approaches to reach and expand the potential market for the products.

Job Duties and Accountabilities:

  • Assist in developing the tools and methods for market research of the products of the selected enterprises.
  • Assist in collecting data for market research and its analysis for insights.
  • Prepare research outputs like reports, briefs, market assessment frameworks, etc.
  • Interact with sector stakeholders to understand and estimate the market size, customer segmentation and risks for each of these products.
  • Identify and engage key stakeholders to understand their roles and influence in enabling the commercialisation of the products.

Shortlisting Criteria

  • Enrolled in or recently graduated from a Master’s degree with a specialisation in livelihoods, entrepreneurship, marketing, market research, development economics or development studies.
