CEEW seeks to hire a Research Intern primarily for its Air Quality programme. The chosen candidate will have to carry out extensive research on air quality management practices across the globe, write weekly summary reports, collect and analyse data. The work might require occasional field visits and coordination with various stakeholders. Candidates with environmental science/environmental engineering/environmental policy background are encouraged to apply for this position.

Job Duties and Accountabilities


  • To understand how pollution control boards in India operate and deal with non-compliances
  • To constantly track policy measures taken by the government and its implementation status related to air pollution
  • To update and manage the in-house databases on air quality
  • To work on visualisation tools such as QGIS and Google Earth Engine
  • To analyse data using tools like MS Excel, python, R etc
  • To carry out relevant literature review and summarize findings as reports
  • To work with senior researchers on conceptualising new projects (as and when needed)
  • To provide research content for organisation’s web pages, blogs, policy briefs etc
  • To engage with relevant stakeholders like Pollution Control Board officers, policy experts, academicians
  • To participate in relevant conferences, workshops, training programmes for comprehensive understanding of the air quality science and governance

Project/programme assistance

  • Assist with project implementation, including help with preparing presentations, factsheets and other communication material.
  • Support efforts to use new media platforms for wide dissemination of CEEW’s work and, in turn, closer engagement with the wider community.
  • Participate in weekly team meetings and assist with preparing minutes.
  • Accompany the other team members for meetings with other stakeholders; prepare minutes of the meetings and assist with relevant follow up

Shortlisting Criteria

Education and experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with specialisation in Environmental Science, Engineering, Policy or related programmes.
  • Understanding of atmospheric physics and chemistry, data analytics, and air quality governance are preferable.
  • Minimum one-year research experience of conducting desk-top research/field-based study/surveys etc.
  • A fair understanding of air quality management in the Indian context

Key skills

  • Must have strong research skills – capability to carry out literature review and synthesis is a key requisite, familiarity with research methods is a bonus
  • Experience working with software programmes such as M S Office, python and spatial analysis tools like QGIS, Google Earth Engine etc. are preferred
  • Willingness to conduct frequent field visits/meetings with stakeholder
  • Willingness to work on multi-disciplinary projects
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Experience in data collection preferred
  • Experience in dealing with stakeholders (farmers, grassroot workers, government etc.) preferred


  • Willingness to learn new research and project management skills
  • Ability to adapt and deliver under tight deadlines in a professional environment
  • Striving for rigour in research and quality in work output
  • Ability to effectively work in a team while being able to independently drive research with minimum assistance, when time demands
  • Ability and willingness to dig deeper into details, while also keeping a sense of the broader objectives and big picture
  • Willingness to learn, grow and develop at personal and professional front, at a rapid pace with a steep learning curve
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary and multicultural environment.
