Context

India has the largest young population in the world and it needs to create jobs and economic prosperity for the hundreds of millions. Simultaneously, the world is moving towards a low carbon future with increasing climate impacts. India has committed to a net-zero target by 2070. How can we concomitantly generate jobs and prosperity while also going green — the answers may lie in shaping a green economy paradigm.

So far, the green economy discussions with regard to climate action have adopted a narrow view. Green economy is generally associated with renewable energy, electric mobility, and, lately, green hydrogen. While these are important, such a limiting view of green opportunities ignores the job and economic potential that other aspects of the climate action and overall pursuit of a green economy may hold. In this programme, we encompass the following four themes under the broader umbrella of green economy:

  • Energy transition: large and small scale renewables, productive use of decentralised renewables, e-mobility, green hydrogen.
  • Bioeconomy: Land and forest-based livelihoods (including but also beyond sustainable food production) including sustainable materials (bioplastics, biofertilizers, biofibers, etc.), biofuels from agro residue, etc.
  • Circular economy: recycling and upcycling opportunities for non-biodegradable materials.
  • Nature-based Solutions: carbon-based/ecosystem services-based revenue streams for cultivators, community dwellers and others.

The idea is also to diversify climate solutioning beyond a focus on mere energy (efficiency and transition) to also focus on materials (efficiency and transition) to design (efficiency and transition).

Purpose:

We seek a distinguished senior advisor who can help shape the narrative and promise of a green economy across the spectrum of market, society and government. The advisor will work closely with the team on defining a narrative building plan and its key priorities that helps translate the evidence on the scale of a green economy to action. The role will focus on high-level strategy, creating new platforms and partnerships, building deep relationships with crucial influencers, and ecosystem building. Their knowledge and experience on running commissions/alliances/campaigns to influence the influencers would be extremely important.

This will include crafting the narrative building plan, designing and executing high-impact initiatives or campaigns, and developing other strategies that help socialise a green economy across market, government, and society.
  • Lead in shaping, bringing together and running a high-level commission on green economy bringing together a set of slatwarts.
  • Identify and build deep relationships with influencers critical for agenda-setting and mainstreaming the green economy narrative. These could include parliamentarians, industry leaders, policymakers, macroeconomists, investors, innovators, and incubators.
  • Build strategic partnerships with influential national and international platforms/organisations to mainstream the green economy narrative.
  • Support and provide inputs to other critical communication campaigns/activities that are running across the institution.

Selection

Education

  • Strong academic credentials, Master’s degree preferably in economics/environmental economics/statistics, design thinking and innovations, behavioural sciences and public policy.

If you are passionate about solving the people-problem in India’s decarbonization journey, we would like to speak to you.
