Purpose

The Power Markets team at CEEW informs and shapes the evolution of power markets in India, including assessing the existing and emerging challenges in integrating renewable energy (RE) with the grid, and ensuring efficient and financially healthy discoms. We are looking for a consultant to join our dynamic team and contribute to advancing the ongoing research and implementation efforts at the state level. The role will include conducting robust modelling exercises for simulating state-level electricity demand, generation and transmission systems to identify strategies for accelerated RE integration in inter-connected grids.

The candidate must have strong demonstrable experience in power system modelling with a good understanding and ability to apply real-world scenarios. The candidate must also be informed about the evolving technologies and cutting-edge research supporting the cost-effective integration of renewable energy in India and other countries.

Job Duties and Accountabilities

Primary Responsibilities

The candidate will simulate future power systems at the state level and undertake robust quantitative analyses based on model results. The roles and responsibilities are outlined below.

  • Review recent reports, journal papers, and other relevant research publications to develop an understanding of state and national-level challenges in increasing the share of renewables in the electricity mix.
  • Prepare formats for data collection and collate data from multiple sources to assist in building a state / national-level simulation model using the open-source tool, GridPath.
  • Conduct field visits to collect data and understand the challenges and recent developments pertaining to transmission and generation planning at the state level.
  • Design and simulate different dispatch model scenarios to reflect transition challenges and opportunities, as well as realities of the current system.
  • Analyse model outputs and distil relevant insights for policymakers and regulators.
  • Assist with project implementation, including preparing presentations, briefing notes, reports and other communication material.
  • Accompany team members for meetings with relevant stakeholders.

Selection Criteria

Qualification

  • Completed a Master’s in technology or completed or enrolled in a doctorate degree with a specialisation in power systems, energy systems, renewable energy technologies, or related fields.
  • Demonstrable experience of at least 2 years in power system modelling (economic dispatch, capacity expansion, and resource adequacy) and related fields is mandatory.

Key Skills

  • Strong ability to organise, process, and analyse large data sets that are used and derived through power/energy models.
  • Proficiency in using one or more power system simulation tools (GridPath, Plexos, PyPSA or others).
  • Ability to learn new tools to manage, process and drive insights from acquired data.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, and R, and software like MS Excel for quantitative analysis.
  • Good understanding of India’s power sector policy and regulatory environment, and transmission/distribution system operations.
  • Ability to adapt to a new environment and deliver under tight deadlines in a professional environment.
  • Ability to effectively work in an interdisciplinary team while being able to independently drive research with minimum assistance when time demands

CEEW operates in a dynamic environment and the candidate will be required to show flexibility in undertaking a variety of tasks.

Compensation

Competitive compensation – commensurate to the experience and matching the best of standards adopted by industry or other similar organisations for similar roles.

Application Process

CEEW is an equal opportunity employer and the selection process does not discriminate on the basis of age, gender, caste, ethnicity, religion, or sexuality. Female candidates are encouraged to apply.
