Designation offered: Programme Associate / Research Analyst- Iron and Steel

Reporting to: Programme Associate

Location: New Delhi

Purpose

CEEW seeks to hire a Programme Associate/ Research Analyst primarily for its Industrial Sustainability and Competitiveness (ISC) programme. The ISC team is working on several different initiatives, which include – energy transition, hydrogen economy, carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS), natural gas, building resilience and competitiveness in the micro, small, and medium (MSME) industry, and characterizing the industrial sector value chains to analyse various aspects such as carbon footprint, financial strength, resource requirements, and jobs supported.

The ISC team aims to support India’s low carbon growth aspirations by developing a roadmap for the iron and steel sector. The team seeks to hire a highly committed candidate to build and expand our programme in the iron and steel sector across a range of technical and policy areas. This role demands high-quality research to provide direction, support, and insights to policy planners and industry captains regarding decarbonisation options. The chosen candidate will have to carry out extensive research that will develop a comprehensive roadmap for the iron and steel sector in India. The candidate should have an active and self-directed interest in the decarbonisation of the iron and steel sector using various mechanisms like energy and material efficiency, fuel switching, renewables integration and carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS). She/he should be able to perform resource assessments, market projections, techno-economic analysis, risk assessment, scenario comparisons, etc. The role offers an excellent opportunity to build and strengthen an emerging research area while collaborating with international experts.

Job Duties and Accountabilities:

Research

  • To identify various avenues for decarbonising the iron and steel sector in India.
  • Develop techno-economic assessment models for the decarbonisation options.
  • Evaluate the potential greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction through various mitigation pathways.
  • To carry out the relevant literature review and summarize findings as a report(s).
  • To update and manage the in-house databases on the iron and steel sector in India.
  • To work with senior researchers on conceptualising new projects (as and when needed).
  • To provide research content for the organisation's web pages, blogs, policy briefs etc.
  • To engage with relevant stakeholders from industries, policy experts, academicians.
  • To participate in relevant conferences, workshops, and training programmes for a comprehensive understanding of the iron and steel sector in India and globally. 

Programme Assistance

  • Assist with project implementation, including help with preparing presentations, factsheets and other communication material.
  • Support efforts to use new media platforms for the wide dissemination of CEEW's work and, in turn, closer engagement with the wider community.
  • Participate in weekly team meetings and assist with preparing minutes.
  • Accompany the other team members for meetings with other stakeholders; prepare minutes of the meetings and assist with relevant follow up.

Shortlisting Criteria

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s (preferred) or PhD degree in metallurgy, mechanical, chemical or related engineering field.
  • Understanding and experience of the iron and steel industry would be appreciated.
  • 0 – 6 years of relevant experience.

Key Skills

  • Fair understanding of energy systems, ability to do techno-economic and carbon emissions assessment
  • Experience with relevant software to develop analyses as necessary; proficiency in Excel a must
  • Must have strong technical expertise and interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to conduct frequent field visits and meetings with stakeholder
  • Willingness to work on multi-disciplinary projects
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Experience in dealing with stakeholders (industry, academic, government etc.) preferred

  • Willingness to learn new research and project management skills.
  • Ability to adapt and deliver under tight deadlines in a professional environment.
