CEEW seeks to hire a suitable candidate with good hands-on experience in handling large data sets, for the position of Research Analyst to expand its work in the area of power sector.  Our programme of work on power sector is driven with the mission to support the clean energy transition in India by examining and promoting the operational, financial, and environmental sustainability throughout the value chain of the electricity sector. We provide knowledge support to the discoms in India, with a particular focus on discoms in Uttar Pradesh.

CEEW offers an intellectually challenging and conducive work environment, with a focus on research rigour, innovative thinking, and strategic outreach. We are looking for an enthusiastic and detail-oriented individual who would be excited to work on a diverse range of subjects concerning power sector reforms in India, with a specific focus on taking research to action. The candidate will be expected to support the team’s work with discoms to help them improve their billing and collection efficiency, and embrace new technologies (smart meters and energy-efficiency). An ideal candidate should have some experience of designing surveys, collecting primary data and ability to analyse large data sets (from surveys or administrative data).

Job Duties and Accountabilities

The candidate should be passionate about using statistical approaches to

  • Assist with specific projects and overall plan of activities in CEEW’s power sector programme
  • Conduct various types of analysis using survey data, administrative data and high frequency real time smart meter data in STATA/R 
  • Assist in writing high-quality research reports and publish in leading peer reviewed journals
  • Generate knowledge content – blogs, policy briefs in regular intervals 
  • Assist in preparing presentations, fact sheets, and other research communication material
  • Assist and accompany senior team members for important meetings and sessions, prepare notes, and conduct follow-ups, as required
  • Assist in effective outreach of research outputs, through close coordination with the outreach team, engagement with a wider network of stakeholders, and concerned policymakers.
  • Present research to key constituencies, advisory bodies, conferences and research institutes
  • Keep a tab on the policy developments in India and across key countries of the world on power sector
  • Support other CEEW colleagues in building their data analysis skills
  • Travel to project sites, when required, to monitor field surveys, conduct interviews or collect data for different research projects

Selection Criteria

Education and Key Skills

  • Master’s degree in quantitative economics, statistics, development economics, public policy, energy economics, energy/electrical/power engineering or related field. Candidates without masters’ but equivalent experience will also be considered
  • Should have a strong research background, along with a good understanding of advanced data analytics
  • Proficiency in using statistical software like STATA, R or Python
  • Ability to analyse and visualise large data sets. Ability to use visualisation tools would be a bonus
  • Ability to summarise and communicate the insights/findings as reports and presentations


  • At least 1-2 years of relevant work experience
  • Some track record of project assistance and timely delivery of outputs

Main skills 

  • Strong analytical and networking skills
  • Sound knowledge of basic economic principles
  • Good written and oral communication skills; Good report writing skills
  • Ability to use statistical softwares and MS Office application suite including MS Excel
  • Ability to represent the research and the organisation at various national and international platforms
  • Desirable: Relevant publications in peer reviewed journals/book chapters
