Designation offered Research Intern – Coal
Reporting to Senior Programme Lead/Programme Lead
Location New Delhi
Duration 3-6 months, extendable upon review
Purpose
CEEW seeks to hire a Research Intern primarily for its Industrial Sustainability and Competitiveness programme. The chosen candidate will have to carry out extensive research that will generate data and/or analyse coal markets in India. The candidate will be primarily responsible for collecting and analysing data and do preliminary analysis related to the a) mapping coal consumption to various end-use sectors, and b) forecasting coal demand across end-use industry sectors. In view of the COVID pandemic, the candidate will be required to work from home. However, as and when the situation improves, the candidate should be flexible to move to New Delhi. Candidates with engineering and economics background are encouraged to apply for this position.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Research
- To understand the coal markets, and supply-demand linkages in India
- To evaluate the coal quality requirements by various end-use sectors and forecast future demand
- To carry out relevant literature review and summarize findings as reports or datasheets
- To update and manage the in-house databases on coal
- To analyse data using tools like MS Excel etc.
- To work with senior researchers on conceptualising new projects (as and when needed)
- To provide research content for organisation's web pages, blogs, policy briefs etc.
- To engage with relevant stakeholders from industries, policy experts, academicians
- To participate in relevant conferences, workshops, training programmes for comprehensive understanding of the coal sector in India and globally.
Project/Programme Assistance
- Assist with project implementation, including preparing presentations, factsheets and other communication material.
- Support efforts to use new media platforms for wide dissemination of CEEW's work and, in turn, closer engagement with the wider community.
- Participate in weekly team meetings and assist with preparing minutes.
- Accompany the other team members for meetings with other stakeholders; prepare minutes of the meetings and assist with relevant follow up.
Selection Criteria
Education and experience
- Enrolled in or completed Bachelor's/Master's degree in engineering or economics
- Understanding of taxation, economic principles, data analytics are preferable.
- 0 – 1 year of relevant research experience.
- A fair understanding of coal quality and markets would be appreciated.
Key Skills
- Must have strong research skills – capability to carry out literature review, web-scraping and synthesis is a key requisite, familiarity with research methods is a bonus
- Experience working with software programmes such as M S Office and spatial analysis tools like QGIS, Google Earth Engine etc. are preferred
- Willingness to conduct frequent field visits (if COVID situation improves)/meetings with stakeholder
- Willingness to work on multi-disciplinary projects
- Good written and oral communication skills
- Experience in data collection preferred
- Experience in dealing with stakeholders (industry, academic, government etc.) preferred

- Willingness to learn new research and project management skills.
- Ability to adapt and deliver under tight deadlines in a professional environment.
