The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) announcement to develop green hydrogen hubs at 3 key ports marks a crucial step under India’s Green Shipping Initiative. The envisioned hubs will cover bunkering and refuelling facilities for new-age green hydrogen-powered vessels, in tandem with India’s green shipbuilding efforts. The announced initiative is particularly well-timed, considering the International Maritime Organization’s 2050 net-zero target, and the proposition of applying a carbon levy on maritime emissions.
Beyond developing these green hydrogen hubs at ports to lower Tank-to-Wake emissions, will the government also seek to develop green inland logistics infrastructure to comprehensively mitigate Well-to-Wake emissions? Given the high costs associated with infrastructure development and hydrogen bunkering, will India seek to leverage public-private partnerships or international collaborations to further expand the initiative to other major ports in the future?
