In 2018, one of the most devastating floods of the century hit Kerala.

Jayachandran, a fish-seller in Cheruthoni in Kerala’s Idukki district, had to watch his house being swept away by floodwaters gushing out of the Idukki dam.

Later, the state government offered INR 1 million as part of the flood rehabilitation project.

With the government’s financial aid and through his own hard work, Jayachandran built a two-bedroom pucca house on a plot approved by the Assistant Engineer of the Panchayat.

“The house is not built on a slope that could slide away. My family can stay indoors safely, even on stormy days,’’ says Jayachandran.
