What are Nature-based Solutions (NbS)?

Why do they matter for India?

NbS include restoration, management, protection, and habitat creation across many ecosystems such as coral reefs, mangroves, salt marsh, forests and grasslands.

India is a highly climate-vulnerable country.

8/10 Indians live in districts vulnerable to extreme hydro-met disasters like floods, droughts and cyclones.

NbS can play a significant role in helping India build climate resilience and create livelihoods.

NbS have the potential to:

1) meet 1/3rd of climate mitigation targets under Paris Agreement goals

2) provide benefits worth USD 170 billion through a variety of ecosystem services

How has India been championing NbS so far?

The 2023 Union Budget introduced 2 novel programmes — the 'Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats and Tangible Income (MISHTI)' and 'Amrit Darohar'.

The initiatives aim to preserve natural ecosystems and build the livelihoods of the local communities.

3. lack of public awareness

However, to scale NbS, India needs to address challenges such as:

 1. inadequate funding

2. Weak institutional capacity

To scale the impact of NbS, we recommend:

 1.  Establishing a research and development cell

2.  Providing technical assistance grants for capacity building & increasing local participation
