India Needs a

Solar Waste Management Policy

As of FY 2021, solar photovaltaic (PV) modules have generated a cumulative waste of

285 kilo tonnes

According to global estimates,  PV waste will touch

78 mn tonnes by 2050

with India being one of the top 5 generators

A responsible solar PV waste management can:

prevent toxic elements leaching into the environment

ensure efficient recovery of different components

As India increases its solar capacity in the coming decades, how can it manage solar PV waste better?

introducing a ban on landfilling

We Recommend:

investing in R&D of recycling techniques

formulating a dedicated PV waste management regulation
