Sumit Kumar Gautam

Senior Programme Lead

Sumit joined The Council as Senior Programme Lead in August 2018. He is a seasoned environmentalist with major research interests in water and wastewater management, climate change policy, pollution-health linkages, and environmental management. His current research focuses on optimising water-use efficiency in different economic sectors and urban water resource allocation.

Sumit has over twelve years of research, advocacy, and consultancy experience in wastewater treatment, rural water supply, air quality management, urban wastewater management, climate change, industrial pollution, WatSan, and septage management. He firmly believes in the importance of stakeholder engagements, traditional wisdom, and an integrated multi-disciplinary approach to solve complex environmental issues.

Prior to joining CEEW, Sumit worked with the Centre for Science and Environment, Treeni Sustainability Solutions, and The Energy and Resources Institute.

He holds a Doctorate in Environmental Science and Engineering from IIT- Bombay and a Masters degree in Environmental Sciences from G B Pant University of Agriculture & Technology. He was awarded Endeavor Research Fellowship by Australian Government to carry out Post-Doctoral research at Monash University, Clayton, in 2014.
