How secure is India’s energy future?

17 Jun 2026   |   1430 – 1630 IST

The Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) is pleased to invite you to the virtual webinar on ‘How secure is India’s energy future?’ on 17 June 2026 from 1430 – 1630 IST.

Amid unprecedented global energy market turmoil—driven by geopolitical conflicts and supply disruptions from Europe to West Asia—India faces heightened vulnerabilities due to its stagnating domestic production, infrastructure bottlenecks, and a heavy reliance on imported fossil fuels to meet its needs as the world's third-largest energy consumer. This urgency underscores the nation's goal of achieving energy independence by 2047 through supply diversification and accelerated demand-side substitution, particularly by unlocking the potential of natural gas as a transition fuel. While the Government of India aims to increase the share of natural gas to 15 percent of the primary energy mix, it currently stagnates at around 5 percent, face-to-face with pricing, infrastructure, and import challenges. To address these critical dynamics, this webinar will present key findings from two CEEW reports and feature expert deliberations on the policy frameworks required to strengthen India's overall energy security—assessing accessibility, reliability, and affordability—while effectively expanding a gas-based economy across heavy-duty freight, steel manufacturing, and city gas distribution networks.
