Munish Kumar Upadhyay

Programme Associate

Munish has joined The Council as a Programme Associate with the Sustainable Water team. His work focuses on the water-food-energy nexus to develop sustainable, evidence-based policies that promote inclusive management of water and energy resources.

Prior to joining The Council, Munish worked as an Indo-Belgium Postdoctoral Fellow at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur), in collaboration with the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO), Belgium, for three years. His postdoctoral research evaluated risks associated with chromium, per—and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), and other micropollutants in wastewater while also developing passive sampling techniques for water quality monitoring.

Munish holds a Ph.D. from Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, India. His doctoral research focused on arsenic biogeochemistry within the water–soil–crop system of the Bengal Delta, developing a redox-based mitigation strategy to reduce arsenic accumulation in rice. During his Master's thesis, he designed a polymer-based membrane system for treating industrial wastewater.

Outside of work, Munish finds balance through a mindful blend of yoga, pranayama, and spiritual reading. He enjoys exploring India's diverse cooking traditions and finds joy in discovering thoughtfully prepared, flavorful meals. A curious reader and nature enthusiast, he often turns to reflective walks and philosophical texts for grounding and insight. Munish believes in purposeful living with inner clarity and compassion.
