Nitin Bassi

Senior Programme Lead

Nitin is a Senior Programme Lead for the Sustainable Water Team at The Council. He has more than 17 years of experience undertaking research, consultancy, and training in water resources. His work areas include river basin water accounting, agriculture water management, institutional and policy analysis in irrigation and water supply management, water quality analysis, climate-induced water risk assessment, and wetland management.

He was part of the delegation of the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India for the second Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group Meeting under India’s G20 Presidency (2022-23). Additionally, he was a nominated member of the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India (GoI) Task Force that developed the White Paper on the U20 priority area 'Ensuring Water Security'.

He played a key role in establishing the India-EU Water Partnership and its work priority areas (2015-2020). He was a Member of the Water Quality Task Force (River Ganga), set up by the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, GoI (2017). He was also a Member of the thematic sub-group on Water Management for Climate-Smart Cities Assessment Framework 2.0, set up by the NIUA, MoHUA, GoI (2020-21). He is a core team member of the Delhi Water Forum which was launched in January 2023.

Before joining CEEW, he worked with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and the Institute for Resource Analysis and Policy. He has been engaged as a specialist in projects, research studies, and assignments supported by various national and international organisations including the European Commission, World Bank, GIZ, DFID, WRG 2030/IFC, UNICEF, WWF, IWMI, Fresh-Thoughts Consulting, DBT, SRTT, and SDTT.

He is a Natural Resource Management Specialist (M. Phil, M. Sc.) with more than 100 publications to his credit. He has co-edited five books, two of which were published by Routledge UK, two by Springer Nature, Switzerland, and one by Sage Publications. He regularly reviews manuscripts for Water Policy, International Journal of Water Resources Development, Journal of Hydrology, and book proposals for Routledge, Sage, Springer, and Wiley.
