Purpose: 
CEEW seeks to hire a Research Analyst for its Power Markets Programme, which aims to inform and shape the evolution of power markets in India for a clean energy future. Supporting sectoral-level transition to clean and reliable electricity through evidence-based and unbiased research is one of the key programme objectives. To this end, CEEW's Power Markets team works closely with discoms, regulators, civil society groups, and end stakeholders in Indian states to devise and implement strategies to support the solarisation of agricultural energy demand for irrigation under the PM-KUSUM scheme.

We are looking for a curious researcher who can ask the right questions, conduct cutting-edge research, and leverage integrated analysis and strategic engagement with key stakeholders to support and advance the transition of agriculture to renewable energy sources. S/he should be a structured thinker and effective communicator with a strong research background. The candidate will be stationed at the New Delhi office but will be required to travel and work from Jaipur for at least a week every month. 

Job Duties and Accountabilities

Primary Responsibilities

  • Undertake robust quantitative and qualitative research to generate evidence for quantifying the benefits and identify pathways of solarising agriculture power demand. This would include but is not limited to (i) conducting a systematic literature review, (ii) framing research questions, (iii) identifying data needs and developing suitable data collection tools/formats, iv) conducting relevant analyses using appropriate quantitative and qualitative methods and (v) summarising the arguments in a coherent narrative in different formats.
  • Critically analyse policies and regulations across Indian states and at the national level (particularly, PM KUSUM scheme) pertaining to solarising agricultural demand and regularly track and maintain a record of developments in the sector.
  • Support the team in identifying the existing challenges at the policy, regulatory and institutional levels in the states and at the central level w.r.t solarising agricultural demand and devising solutions to overcome them.
  • Regularly travel to field sites to conduct fieldwork, including focus group discussions, interviews, etc. 
  • Build strong networks of trust with key stakeholders in the sector, including government officials, regulators, farmers, industry and civil society organisations.
  • Assist the team in writing high-quality research reports, blogs and policy briefs, and preparing presentations whenever required.

 

Other responsibilities

  • Use insights from the research to inform policy by making written submissions on draft policies/regulations.
  • Participate in relevant conferences, workshops, and training programs, and in-person and virtual stakeholder consultations. as necessary to communicate research findings and gain insights on new research in focus areas.
  • Accompany team members for meetings with stakeholders; prepare minutes of the meetings and assist with relevant follow up.
  • Participate in regular inter- and intra-team meetings for collaborative outputs.

 

Selection criteria

Qualification

  • A Master’s degree with a specialisation in power, energy, renewables, energy economics, or related fields
  • Proficiency in any of the statistical software like STATA, R or Python is required

Work experience

0-1 years of relevant work experience in the relevant field
Candidates with strong research and data skills but with less sectoral experience may also be considered

  • Ability to analyse data/information and present it in a clear and accurate manner, both verbal and written
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and confidence to engage with government and private actors
  • Ability to learn new tools/skills to manage, process and drive insights from datasets
