Doing More with Less Coal – The Role of Efficiency and Thermal Decommissioning in the Power Sector Transition

26 Jul 2021   |   1600–1730 hrs IST

There is an opportunity to decommission a significant base of inefficient thermal generators without impacting the overall power supply in this decade. Further, there is scope for financial savings in pursuing accelerated decommissioning of identified plants while also attracting new investment into the sector.

In this session, we will deliberate the technical and financial challenges that the stakeholders face in making power generation cleaner. We will bring together practitioners who will speak to the system operations of the grid, the legacy thermal assets in India, and the opportunities for financing such a transition – given that there will be implications to the prices faced by end-consumers and the returns on investments by both, the public and private entities.

This session will also mark the launch of two key studies on this theme: 'Coal Power's Trilemma: Variable Cost, Efficiency, and Financial Solvency' and 'Mapping Costs for Early Coal Decommissioning in India'.
