What does the Global Stocktake (GST) mean for India?

16 Mar 2023   |   1030 – 1400 IST

The Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) is pleased to invite you to a workshop 'What does the Global Stocktake (GST) mean for India?' on 16 March 2023, 1030-1400 IST at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.

At the 21st Conference of Parties in 2015, countries agreed to a historic deal, the Paris Agreement, where both developed and developing countries submit their respective Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). Post COP21, significant development has happened on various aspects of the agreement.

The Paris Agreement outlined the periodic Global Stocktake (GST) process to assess collective progress on mitigation, adaptation and means of implementation (finance, technology and capacity building) in the light of equity to meet the long-term goals of the Paris Agreement. The two-year-long efforts of the global stocktake will culminate at COP28 in Dubai. The outputs of GST will consist of recommendations, best practices, and key political messages across thematic areas.

As one of the largest emerging economies and a leader in the global climate debate, India will have a key role to play as the outcomes of the GST take shape throughout the year. Further, outcomes of the GST at the international level could accelerate domestic and on-ground action. This workshop will discuss the GST process so far, the opportunities and challenges that it offers for India, and key recommendations India may have for the GST. We will also discuss how to make the outputs of the GST robust to spur action, accountability, and international cooperation for climate action.
