Creating a democratic demand for clean air

“I can run air purifiers at home, but can I lock up my daughter at home?” said Dr Arunabha Ghosh in his talk 'Creating a democratic demand for clean air' in TED Talks India Nayi Baat Season 2 hosted by Shah Rukh Khan. The talk, recorded in Hindi and English, was aired on Sunday, 10 November 2019.

Dr Ghosh proposed his vision of Mission 80-80-80 in which India, by the time the country turns 80 as an independent nation (in 2027), should aim to reduce air pollution by 80% in 80 cities. He suggested five key measures to reach this goal: educate oneself, become active monitors, be prepared to pay a price, build empathy for fellow citizens and change one's lifestyle. Throughout the talk, Dr Ghosh reiterated that citizens ought to create a democratic demand for clean air. “Air pollution is the great leveller: it affects us all, rich and poor, city dwellers and village folk, those inland and those on the coast,” he said.

TED Talks India Nayi Baat season 2 features speakers who are combining social responsibility and innovation to do extraordinary work for a better future of the country. Last season, the show featured Karan Johar, Ekta Kapoor, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Javed Akhtar and Vikas Khanna and many real-life heroes.
