The Role of Natural Gas in India's Energy Transition

03 Aug 2021   |   1500–1630 hrs IST

Natural gas is one of the big bets for India’s energy transition. Multiple efforts, including large-scale investments, have been undertaken to increase the share of natural gas in the primary energy mix to 15 per cent by 2030. However, moving to a gas-based economy would have implications on the country’s jobs, growth, sustainability, and decarbonisation objectives.

In this session, we will discuss the role of natural gas in India's energy transition story, the ‘one nation, one gas grid’ vision, and the uncertainties related to this future. This session will also mark the launch of a new working paper, 'India’s Natural Gas Future Amid Changing Global Energy Dynamics'.

International Dialogue on Pre-2020 Climate Commitments: Have Developed Countries Delivered? How Can They Regain Trust?

28 Jul 2021   |   1500–1645 hrs IST

Based on the principle of equity and common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities, the onus to reduce greenhouse gas emissions during the pre-2020 period was placed on the developed countries. However, this period witnessed several setbacks characterised by poor participation of developed countries and their performance. This presents a grim picture for pre-2020 outcomes, posing economic, environmental, and political risks to achieving post-2020 goals, and reinforcing existing inequalities between developed and developing nations.

This webinar will showcase differentiated positions of the developed countries with respect to their performance in the pre-2020 regime. The discussion would centre around the need - and mechanisms - to accelerate time-bound actions to meet erstwhile climate targets to strengthen trust and confidence among the developing and developed nations. In the session, we will also launch a new CEEW study, 'Unpacking Pre-2020 Climate Commitments: Who Delivered, How Much, and How will the Gaps be Addressed?'.

Doing More with Less Coal – The Role of Efficiency and Thermal Decommissioning in the Power Sector Transition

26 Jul 2021   |   1600–1730 hrs IST

There is an opportunity to decommission a significant base of inefficient thermal generators without impacting the overall power supply in this decade. Further, there is scope for financial savings in pursuing accelerated decommissioning of identified plants while also attracting new investment into the sector.

In this session, we will deliberate the technical and financial challenges that the stakeholders face in making power generation cleaner. We will bring together practitioners who will speak to the system operations of the grid, the legacy thermal assets in India, and the opportunities for financing such a transition – given that there will be implications to the prices faced by end-consumers and the returns on investments by both, the public and private entities.

This session will also mark the launch of two key studies on this theme: 'Coal Power's Trilemma: Variable Cost, Efficiency, and Financial Solvency' and 'Mapping Costs for Early Coal Decommissioning in India'.

Mapping India's Energy Subsidies 2021: Time to Renew Support for India’s Clean Energy Ambitions?

15 Jul 2021   |   1500-1630 hrs IST

Government support is more important than ever for the energy transition in the wake of COVID-19. Shifting government support from fossil to clean energy can ensure that every rupee of public money helps in achieving the goals of access, energy security, and the shift to a low-carbon economy.

The session will feature insights on how the Government of India has used subsidies to support different types of energy from FY 2014 until FY 2020, and describe major shifts since the onset of COVID-19. Further, we will explore how subsidy policy can best promote solar PV manufacturing, and how investments by Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) are supporting the clean energy transition.

How can Emerging Markets Leapfrog to Clean Electricity?

12 Jul 2021   |   1530–1700 hrs IST | 1100-1230 hrs BST

Renewable electricity is the cleanest and cheapest alternative to fuel growth in demand in emerging markets. India is already leading the way, as several other countries continue to seize this opportunity. Renewables create jobs, reduce pollution, reduce import costs, and accelerate development, creating unique conditions to achieve the trifecta of jobs, growth and sustainability.

The Parishad webinar will mark the launch of the report Reach for the Sun: The Emerging Market Electricity Leapfrog’ by Carbon Tracker and CEEW. The session will focus on the ongoing energy transition in India and emerging economies and will map the pathways to align the energy transition for emerging economies with the Paris climate targets ahead of COP26.

How can Data Accelerate India's Energy Transition?

21 Apr 2021   |   1530–1700 hrs IST

The session will mark the launch of the India Renewables Dashboard, a database developed jointly by CEA, SSEF and CEEW-CEF.

India is making great strides in its energy transition. With nearly 93 GW of installed Renewable Energy (RE) capacity,  RE’s share of India’s electricity mix is also on an upswing. The India Renewables Dashboard tracks source-wise daily RE generation for Indian states rolled up to a regional and national level. In addition, it also helps quantify CO2 emissions mitigated as a result of such generation and captures granular plant level generation data for a subset of capacity.

Empowering Electricity Consumers Through User-friendly Bill Design

23 Mar 2021   |   1500 – 1630 IST

Electricity bills are a primary mode of communication between the consumers and the distribution company (discom). However, our review of the electricity bill formats of 26 discoms in India highlights that bill formats used in several states do not provide the requisite information to consumers. The session will feature insights on how different discoms communicate information to their consumers through electricity bills, and how this could be further improved. Using a case study on Tamil Nadu, we will discuss the opportunities and strategies for improving bill formats, and their co-benefits for consumers and other actors.
